Biography

Hi! I’m Anika Marsh. I’m a fine artist with a deep passion for painting. I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Providence, RI after I graduated from The American School in Japan. I am an Exhibiting Artist Member at the Providence Art Club and I recently earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

As a painter, I must see something to paint. I want the materiality, texture, body, and thickness of the oily substance, what I define as paint, to translate the language of the surface of the image. Furthermore, I aim to activate the unique qualities of paint and color in my work, evoking mood and liveliness that transcends reality, but at the same time make the painting more “real” than a photograph. In other words, I let paint act as an illusion of reality, but I also let paint be paint. I do not limit my choices of subject matter for painting. I let my curiosity show through as I explore and experiment in my paintings. Most importantly, I enjoy the adventure painting brings, as each painting offers me new and unique experiences.

Thank you!
